Well, after doing a little more research, I think my photo of what I thought was a mason bee is actually of a green metallic sweat bee, of the genus agapostemon. They are literally attracted to sweat because of the high salt content. I haven't found anything that says how good they are at pollinating, and if they're attracted to sweat, then I'm thinking that's a good reason to avoid yard work in the heat of the day! But this is the first one I have ever seen, and I'm glad I got a picture of it.
And I still want to get some mason bees. Someday.

I need to go check my garden for lettuce. I think it should be growing soon! I'm sorry your bee wasn't a Mason, but maybe you'll find one yet!
